Nacre (also called mother-of-pearl) is the inner layer of molluscan shells. Nacre is the material pearls are composed of. For nacre to form into a pearl, multiple layers must be secreted by the mollusk, which they do to protect themselves from foreign bodies. Over time, these layers build up into a pearl.
